A pre-tabbed cotton wick sized for a ~7 cm container

A first candle is a tin, a cotton wick, and wax heated in a double boiler. You are not opening a scent empire. You are learning a melt point and a wick size.

Soy flake is forgiving. Paraffin smells sharper and shrinks more. Pick one wax and stay with it for the first three tins.

Notes

Never melt wax in a microwave unattended or on a stove eye. Wax fires are grease fires — lid, not water.
If the wick drowns, it was too thin for the diameter. If it mushrooms and smokes, it is too fat or untrimmed.
Essential oils are not formulated to bind in wax the way candle fragrance oils are. They can smell like nothing or like a headache.

FAQ

They colour poorly and can clog a wick. Buy dye chips if you want colour.
